Car Paint Safety

A fresh coat of paint can transform a car's appearance. However, auto paint contains toxic chemicals, including solvents and isocyanates, which cause health problems such as asthma. Following safety guidelines can help amateurs and professionals handle auto paint safely.
  • Protective Gear

    • Always wear chemical-protective gloves when handling paints and solvents. In addition, wear a paint suit, head sock and respirator when mixing paint, wiping solvent, spraying paint or cleaning paint guns.

    Ventilation

    • Proper ventilation during all stages of auto painting is necessary to remove hazardous fumes. For best results, use both a local exhaust ventilation system that includes a hood, ductwork and fan and a general exhaust fan, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Also close paints and solvents after use to reduce vapors.

    Disposal

    • Unused auto paint is considered hazardous waste and must be disposed of accordingly. Save money and reduce your impact on the environment by only buying and mixing paint you will need and using leftover paint in ground coats, door interiors and edging.
