Craftsman 35161 is a small gas powered chainsaw with a 16-inch bar. It is designed for home use and produced exclusively for Sears. As with all Sears products, the manual for Craftsman 35161 -- full model number 358.35161.0 -- can be found online at the Manage My Life Website. Specifications for the chainsaw include choke lever positions, a full breakdown of all product parts, engine size and performance and a description of the bar knob and adjusting wheel.
Choke Lever Settings
-
Three choke lever positions are on the Craftsman 35161 chainsaw. These positions are Off, Half Choke, and Full Choke. If the choke lever is in the Off position, the chainsaw will not start when the starter rope is pulled. This setting is a safety precaution, though the lever must be manually set to Off when users are finished using the chainsaw. When the lever is turned to the Full Choke setting the engine should start at full functionality when the starter rope is pulled. The Half Choke position starts the engine at idle speed, which allows the machine to warm up before beginning operation.
Parts
-
Craftsman 35161 chainsaws contain a total of 99 parts. Parts are divided into two categories. These categories are chassis/bar/handle parts, which form the exterior working parts of the chainsaw, and cylinder/crankshaft/shield, which are the interior working parts of the chainsaw. The former category contains 57 parts, the latter 42. Minor parts, like screws, bolts, washers and gaskets, stand alongside major working parts, like the ignition module, carburetor, air filter and muffler. Replacement parts and full schematic diagrams can be found on the Sears Parts Direct website.
Engine
-
Craftsman 35161 is equipped with a two-cycle 36 cubic centimeter engine. Two cycle, or two-stroke, engines are one of two small engine types. The other is the four-stroke engine. Two-stroke engines have a simple valveless construction and are light and easy to manufacture. They have the potential to be twice as powerful as four-stroke engines of the same size as the engine fires with every crankshaft revolution; four-stroke engines fire every other revolution. The cubic centimeter measurement indicates the air/fuel mixture capacity of the engine. Engines with a 36cc displacement are commonly used on motor scooters and are strong for chainsaws.
Bar Knob and Adjusting Wheel
-
Bar knobs and adjusting wheels on Craftsman 35161 chainsaws help users check and maintain chain tension. Chain tension is important for insuring full chainsaw functionality and protecting users from injury. These twin parts are located on the right-hand side of the chainsaw underneath the front hand guard. Turning the bar knob loosens the clamp on the chainsaw bar. A loosened clamp allows users to adjust the tension of the chain using the adjusting knob. If a chain is too tight, it may break and fly into the face of the user, which can cause intense pain and injury. If a chain is too loose, it will not cut properly.
