How to Convert MP3s to WMV

WMV, short for Windows Media Video, is a video format. Though an MP3 is an audio file and not a video file, it is possible to convert MP3 into WMV. Since no video information is included in the MP3 file, though, when the MP3 is converted to a WMV file, the screen shows as blank or displays a screensaver when the WMV file is played back.
  • Movie Maker

    • 1

Launch Microsoft's Windows Movie Maker. Microsoft's free video editor accepts MP3 files and can save files in WMV format.

    • 2

Click the "Import Media" button in Windows Movie Maker to add the MP3 file to the editor. In the "Import Media Items" window that pops up, go to the folder that contains the MP3 file. Double-click the MP3 to send it to the "Imported Media" pane in the Movie Maker window.

    • 3

Drag the MP3 file from the "Imported Media" pane to the Movie Maker timeline. To drag the file, left-click it, hold down the mouse button, drag the cursor to the timeline and let go of the mouse button. The file is automatically added to the "Audio/Music" track of the timeline.

Import any video clip into the program, even if the video clip shows only a black screen, and drag the clip from the "Imported Media" pane to the "Video" track of the timeline. You must have at least one clip on the "Video" track to save the movie as WMV.

    • 5

Bring up the "Publish Movie" window in Movie Maker. Click "File" >" Publish Movie," and the window opens. Leave the "This Computer" option selected and click "Next" on the first screen.

    • 6

Type the name that you would like to use for the WMV file into the box by "File Name." If you would like to change the folder where the WMV file is saved, click the "Browse" button by "Publish to," go to the folder and click "OK." Then, click "Next."

Click "Publish." Windows Movie Maker automatically publishes the MP3 as WMV.
