How to Cut With a Dremel Stylus

The Dremel Stylus is a modified version of traditional Dremel rotary tools. The Stylus adds versatility in design by adding a pistol-style grip and long-lasting Lithium rechargeable battery. The Stylus accepts the same types of attachments that Dremel aficionados have come to expect, with just a few exceptions. The Stylus cannot mount to a router-stand, nor can it attach the Flex Shaft, which is a flexible extension used for tight areas. However, the design of the Stylus is so versatile, those additions are not really needed. To cut with the Stylus, you simply add one of the cutting attachments and go to work.

Remove the Dremel Stylus from the charger and slide the shaft lock button toward the attachment end of the device. The shaft button is easily identifiable by the picture of a lock on the button. The shaft lock will lock the driving mechanism, preventing the collet holding the attachment from spinning.

Loosen the collet nut from the attachment end and remove the current attachment, if present.

    • 3

Insert the cutting attachment into the end of the Stylus and lock in place by tightening the collet nut. The cutting attachment might be a cutting wheel or various engraving/router tools, which Dremel calls "cutters." If attaching the cutting wheel, you may need to insert the attachment containing a screw at the end. You simply remove the screw, using the end of the included wrench, place the cutting disk in place and lock down with the screw.

Hold the Stylus in a pencil grip; your bottom three fingers will hold the handle.

Select the speed by rotating the speed selector at the back of the Stylus. Press and hold the power button, located at the tip of the Stylus, for a half a second to power on the Stylus. It will cycle up for two to four seconds before coming to full speed.

Press the attachment carefully into the material to be cut. Do not force anything or you may damage the attachment or bog down the device. Light pressure is all that is required.
