How to Manage Electrical Safety

Employers must protect employees from electrical hazards by implementing a rigorous set of electrical standards in the workplace. Electrical hazards include electric shock, fires, explosion and electrocution. You can prevent deaths and injuries by implementing simple safety measures that safeguard against electrical hazards. Use the Occupational Health and Safety Administration's electrical standards as a frame of reference for promoting and maintaining workplace safety. OSHA standards focus on electric equipment safety, work practices and training.

Use devices such as fuses and circuit breakers that can open the circuit to protect against excessive current due to a fault or overload.

    • 2

Use high-quality protective insulation around wires in all the circuits in your workplace. Set up main bonding jumpers for all the electrical systems to enable fault current to return to the source.

    • 3

Implement proper grounding procedures for the electrical systems and people who are in contact with them. Install grounding conductors for all the electrical equipment. Install ground fault circuit interrupters for an extra layer of protection.

Remove cords from plugs when the equipment is not in use. Remove or replace wires with fraying insulation.
