How to Remove OnStar From My Car

Motorists uncomfortable with OnStar's GPS-monitoring system can physically remove the device from their General Motors vehicle in just a couple simple steps. The system is designed to offer emergency-crash response and stolen-vehicle-recovery. Yet through these features, the company can also track the vehicle at all times. Keep in mind that removing OnStar means all of the company's services will be disabled -- including voice memo and voice navigation.

      Open the vehicle's trunk. Remove the tub cover, which is where your spare tire is usually stored.

      Remove the sill plate. This is the area around the tub cover. You will need to unscrew the rear cargo net holders if your car has them.

      Remove the side cargo net holders. Pull the side pane toward the middle of the vehicle. It does not need to be removed all the way You will see the OnStar box; it is a small silver box with a green light.

      Remove the three connectors attached to the box to disable the Onstar service.
