How to Stain the Interior of a Log Home

If you are planning to stain the interior of your log home, take the time to perform meticulous preparations, or you may end up with a splotchy finish and unforeseen stains. In addition, because oil-based stain emits harmful fumes, you must take the necessary safety precautions, or you could become overwhelmed. Employ the proper preparation, application and safety strategies, or you could end up turning an exciting do-it-yourself project into a messy and potentially dangerous situation.
    • 1

Remove items from the home that may interfere with your ability to work.

    • 2

Dust the log interior with a broom.

    • 3

Use painter's tape and plastic drop cloths to protect areas within the home from stain drips and splatters.

    • 4

Open two 1-gallon cans of oil-based stain. Stir the can of stain for two minutes, using a wooden stir stick. Empty each can of stain into a plastic 5-gallon bucket.

    • 5

Open windows and put on your respirator.

    • 6

Coat the interior of the log home with oil-based stain, using a roller frame, equipped with a shed-free roller cover. Roll vertically, moving from your left to your right. Use a paintbrush, specifically engineered for use with oil-based paints, to apply stain to the awkward spaces between the logs.

Wait 2 hours for the oil-based stain to dry. Apply a second coat if you want darker results.
