Minimum Requirements for Windows 2000

    • There are four different versions of Windows 2000 and each one has different system requirements. The four versions are Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Datacenter Server and Windows 2000 Advanced Server. The system interface is very similar to the previous version, Windows NT 4. Microsoft offered support for Windows 2000 until July 2010.

    Platform Support

    • Unlike previous versions of Windows, Windows 2000 can only be used with platforms that use Intel Pentium processors. The minimum requirement for the microprocessor is the Pentium 133 MHz processor. All four versions have this processor as the minimum requirement to run Windows 2000. The maximum number of processors for the Professional version is two, the Server version can have a maximum of four, the Advanced Server version can have up to eight processors and the Datacenter Server version can use a maximum of 32 processors.

    Hard Drive

    • The minimum amount of space needed on the hard drive to install and run Windows 2000 Professional is 650 MB. For the Server, Advanced Server and Datacenter Server versions, 1 GB of space is needed. However, Microsoft recommends at minimum 2 GB. Most of the time Windows 2000 will use a NTFS file system. Instead you can choose the FAT file system, although an additional 100 MB of hard drive space is needed.

    Memory

    • The minimum amount of memory needed for the Professional version is 64 MB. The Server version requires 128 MB and the Advanced Server and Datacenter Server require at minimum 256 MB. While it is not necessary, it is recommended that the Server version also uses 256 MB. While these are the minimum requirements, the Professional and Server versions can use up to 4 GB of memory. The Advanced Server can support a maximum of 8 GB of memory and the Datacenter Server can use a maximum of 64 GB.

    Video Card

    • The minimum video card needed for all of these versions of Windows 2000 is VGA video. These are required for systems that use a keyboard and CDROM.
