Traditional Irish Decorations

Ireland's rich heritage is reflected in the many traditions that are still practiced by Irish families today. Many Irish families are quite proud of this heritage and demonstrate their patriotism and cultural pride with traditional home decorations.
  • Types

    • Traditional Irish decorations typically revolve around three themes -- family heritage, patriotism and religion. Heritage decorations may include family mottos and crests. Patriotic decorations include the Irish flag and colors, while religious decor may draw from Christianity or early Irish paganism. Examples of traditional religious decor include Irish crosses and shamrocks.

    Significance

    • Traditional Irish decorations often have a mythical or superstitious significance. Many decorative plaques are placed in the home with blessings for the home and family, such as St. Brigid's blessing. The family crest has historical significance because most have been in use for centuries.

    Holiday Decor

    • The Irish also have a variety of holiday-specific traditional decorations. These include shamrocks for Saint Patrick's Day and Christmas candles placed in the windows of the home. Mistletoe, another traditional Christmas decoration, originated in Ireland, where it has been used since pagan times.
