The Windows Print Screen key, often abbreviated Prt Scr, is a multipurpose tool that works by capturing an image of the screen to the keyboard. There are a number of ways you can modify the way Print Screen captures an image based on other keys that you press alongside it. You can use these key combinations to create screenshots that you print or send to other users.
Alt+Print Screen
-
Pressing the "Alt" key and "Print Screen" simultaneously will capture an image of your currently active desktop window. All other windows will be discarded, making this ideal if you do not wish to share your entire desktop viewing space.
Print Screen
-
Pressing the Print Screen key by itself will copy an image of the active desktop to your clipboard. This means that everything visible on your desktop will appear in the image.
Putting Print Screen Output in a File
-
Microsoft Word and Microsoft Paint work hand-in-hand with Print Screen to allow you to paste the image content of your clipboard to a file that can be saved. You can paste the active clipboard desktop image into a new Word or Paint document by opening either program from your Start menu and then pressing "Ctrl"+"V" to paste the image. You can save the document from the "File" > "Save as" menu.
