The 1997 Audi A8 was the first D2 model released in North America of the first generation line. It is Audi's largest sedan, with an aluminum chassis and five-person seating capacity.

    • The first generation D2 was released in Europe in 1994. In 1997 a coupe model prototype, with a shorter aluminum body, was simultaneously released with the A8. The second generation D3 began production in 2002, while the third generation D4 is set to be released for model year 2011.
