3G stands for "third generation," a term used to describe wireless technology. 3G networks are mainly used for handsets and mobile phones, to make both voice and video phone calls as well as connecting to the Internet. 3G capability makes it faster and easier to connect to the Internet, download and upload files and browse the Internet.
Transmission Speed

Wireless 3G networks are desirable because of their extremely fast data transmission. The quick transmission speed allows for streaming video and lightning fast downloads and uploads. Compared to 2G networks, which offer mostly voice information transmission, 3G technology features data transfer at a higher rate of megabits per second. 3G networks also facilitate faster web browsing and file transfers.
GPS

Many wireless devices and cell phones equipped with 3G technology feature global positioning systems (GPS). Most 2G technology does not support this feature. The navigation software is available via application download onto most smartphones. 3G networks make it easier to navigate unfamiliar territory without having to purchase a portable navigation system.
Security

3G network technology also features better security than 2G technology. The 3G's higher level of security offers user authentication capability when communicating to other wireless devices. 2G networks do not support this security feature. The 3G user can be sure that she is logged on to the intended network by authenticating the network with the user's equipment.
