DIY GPS Locator

A global positioning system locator will keep you from getting lost when you are in unfamiliar territory. You can purchase a dedicated device for a few hundred dollars. Alternatively you can make your own using a smart phone and a free GPS program. The advantage of using a smart phone is that you can also share your position with other people.

  Purchase a cell phone that you can get Internet access on. These are readily available at many online or offline mobile phone stores. You can purchase them for as little as $50 as of 2010.

  Sign up for an unlimited data plan. GPS programs require a lot of data and if you don't have an unlimited plan you can quickly rack up a lot of unexpected charges. As of 2010 these cost about $35 per month and can be purchased through your mobile service provider.

  Choose a GPS tracking program. There are several free programs available. Three worth considering are Google Latitude, AmazeGPS, and Mologogo. All of these will turn your cell phone into a tracking and navigation device. All of these are free as of 2010.

  Register for your application. Provide your name, a password, create a user ID, and provide your mobile phone number and email address. You will be sent a download link.

  Turn your mobile phone on and open up its web browser. Go to the link and download the program. Agree to the terms and conditions and install the program. Once it is complete, restart the phone.

  Go to the "Menu" and start the application. You will get a message that confirms that your GPS is activated and that your phone can be tracked. You will see your location on a map represented by a dot. As you move, the dot on the map will move as well. You can choose three different views for your map, satellite, street view and hybrid. This will allow you to navigate.

  Log on to the website where you signed up, from your computer, or other Internet enabled device. You can now view the location of the phone and track it as it moves.
