Energy Saving Electric Heater Temperature Settings

Heating the air and water in our homes with electricity is convenient, but it can be costly. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, electric energy might also contribute to pollution, depending on the energy source. You can save energy by adjusting the temperature settings for your electric heaters.
  • Function

    • Temperature settings on electric heaters regulate the lowest temperature you set for the device. Switches are used to turn the heater on or off depending on the temperature setting and the information from the measurement device; as temperature drops, the heater is turned back on to raise it to the desired setting. In a water heater, water temperature is measured in the tank or at the effluent pipe. For air heaters, ambient air temperature is measured by a thermometer located out of direct flow of any ventilation duct, but it may be anywhere in the building.

    Where to Adjust

    • For electric air heaters, like those that keep your rooms warm, adjust the temperature settings on the thermostat used for monitoring and controlling the heating, cooling, and ventilation for your building. For electric water heaters, adjust the temperature setting on the water heater.

    Temperature Settings for Water

    • According to the U.S. Department of Energy, water heaters should be set to 120 degrees F to maximize energy savings and preserve the water heater parts. Additional energy savings can be achieved by opening the circuit breaker to your electric water heater when you are away.

    Temperature Settings for Air

    • Electric air heaters should be set to 68 degrees F when you are in your home and needing warmth. When you are away at work or asleep, additional energy savings can be achieved by reducing the temperature setting to between 53 and 58 degrees F, according to the Department of Energy. A programmable thermostat can automate these settings, so you can save energy without having to stop and adjust the thermostat several times throughout the day.
