Felted Slippers Directions

Cozy felted slippers can be made from old wool sweaters that have been machine washed and dried until the wool fibers have been fused into felt. These slippers benefit from a pattern made to the exact size of your own feet. Find high quality wool sweaters at thrift shops. Make the slippers, sewn with a tapestry needle and embroidery thread, for holiday gifts.
    • 1

Wash and dry the sweater several times in the washing machine and dryer.

    • 2

Stand with a piece of computer paper under your right foot. Trace around your foot with the pencil.

    • 3

Draw an oval around the foot tracing, adding 1-inch to the toe and 1/2-inch to each side edge. Cut out the oval pattern for the slipper bottom.

    • 4

Pin the pattern to the sweater and cut out the oval for the slipper bottom.

    • 5

Draw a rectangle inside the slipper bottom pattern that is centered against the heel. The top of the rectangle will be 2/3 the length of the slipper bottom and 2/3 the slipper bottom width. Cut out the pattern for the slipper top.

    • 6

Pin the front portion of the slipper top and bottom together, wrong sides facing each other.

    • 7

Slide your foot inside the pinned slipper and cut off the excess fabric around the heel with the scissors to ensure a good fit, leaving room for a seam. Slide your foot out and pin the top and bottom sections together at the heel.

    • 8

Sew a straight stitch around the perimeter of the slipper with the tapestry needle and the embroidery thread, with a 1/4-inch seam. Sew up the back of the slipper with a straight seam. Turn the slipper inside out to the right side.

    • 9

Cut the button band off the sweater with the scissors. Sew it to the inside edge of the slipper top, right sides together, with a straight stitch while pulling the button band tightly.

    • 10

Repeat all steps for a left foot slipper.
