Fun Facts About the USS Wisconsin

The USS Wisconsin served in World War II, the Korean War and the Gulf War, earning five battle stars during her career. The USS Wisconsin was decommissioned in 1991 and is now berthed at the Nauticus maritime science center.
  • Vital Statistics

    • The USS Wisconsin was one of four vessels in the Iowa battleship class and the 52,000 ton ship was launched on December 7, 1943. Her original weaponry consisted of nine 16-inch guns and 20 five-inch guns. The USS Wisconsin was refitted to carry Tomahawk and Harpoon missiles for her service in the Persian Gulf.

    World War II Service

    • The USS Wisconsin originally served in the Third Fleet during the liberation of the Phillipines. She was assigned to the Fifth Fleet in 1945, and bombarded industrial and military targets on the Japanese island of Honshu. Her final mission of World War II was Operation Magic Carpet, during which she brought U.S. troops home from the Pacific.

    Nauticus

    • The USS Wisconsin is currently berthed at the Nauticus Center in Norfolk, Virginia. The Nauticus' museum screens "USS Wisconsin: The Last Battleship," a film that chronicles the vessel's history and hosts Wisky Walk, an exhibit of artifacts from the USS Wisconsin accompanied by photos and videos. As of October 2010, visitors may also tour the interior of the Wisconsin.
