Getting comfortable in front of a crackling fire in a big fireplace is relaxing, but you may become uncomfortable if you don't have the tools to work with the fire. Logs fall, sparks fly through screens and ashes pile up. Few things address the problem or increase your comfort like a set of heavy iron fire tools.
Poker
-
A heavy iron poker is the Swiss army knife of fireplace tools. You can use it for just about anything. The poker helps you move wood in the fire, break up large chunks into smaller pieces and arrange new wood that has just been put on the fire.
Tongs
-
A pair of heavy iron tongs will save you lots of trouble, especially in a large fireplace. The tongs can be used to grab wood already in the fireplace and to transfer it exactly where you want it. You can also use tongs to place new wood on the fire in precise locations.
Shovel
-
A heavy iron fireplace shovel is a necessity for cleaning out the fireplace. Use it as a dustpan with a fireplace broom after the fire has died out. A fireplace shovel also is a convenient tool for scooping up burning embers that fall out of the fireplace or for moving piles of embers to a better location.
