How do I Install a Bathtub Faucet Stem?

The faucet stem controls the flow of water through the faucet and out of the spout in your bathtub. These stems screw into a stem socket on the faucet body. A rubber washer located at the end of the stem seals the faucet watertight when in the closed position. This washer is raised and lowered by a handle connected to the end of the valve stem. Installing a bathtub faucet stem is necessary when replacing or repairing an old stem.

  Turn off the water supply for the bathtub faucet where you are installing the stem, if it isn't already. The main water supply valve for your house, apartment or condo is installed next to your water meter. In a condo or apartment, this may be located on the side of the building or in a utility closet where your washing machine is set up. In a house, the main water valve and meter are installed in a concrete or plastic box in your yard. Turn off the main water supply valve by rotating it in the opposite direction.

  Clear out the stem socket and surrounding area of silt and calcium buildup with a toothbrush.

  Turn the faucet stem over so you can see the washer at the bottom. Apply a few dabs of silicone grease to the face of the washer.

  Wrap the threads on the stem with nonstick-coated plumber's tape. Make at least two turns around the stem with the tape, pulling tightly as you turn.

  Insert the stem into the stem socket. Secure by tightening clockwise with a wrench.

  Insert the escutcheon, if present, in place around the stem. These may either screw into place on the stem socket, or be secured by a small screw on the underside.

  Slip the handle over the end of the faucet stem. Slowly turn the handle until you feel it fall into place in the grooves on the stem. Insert the faucet handle screw through the hold in the middle of the handle and tighten. Press the faucet screw cap into place.

  Restore the water supply for the faucet.
