How to Align Gutters

Perform an annual inspection of your gutters to make sure they are properly aligned prior to a rainy season. Excessive rain and wind can knock your gutters out of alignment. If water does not drain properly to the downspouts, it can collect and damage your roof or the framing of your house.

Safely position the extension ladder and inspect your gutters for any debris that might have collected inside them. Put on protective gloves and remove all debris.

    • 2

Place your ladder at the highest point of the gutter run. Fill a gallon jug with water, then pour it into the gutter. Check for slow drainage points. These are signs that the gutter is out of alignment in those areas.

    • 3

Measure the highest point of the gutter run. It should be 1 1/4 inches below the metal drip edge flashing. Drive a nail at this marking point.

    • 4

Measure 10 feet from the highest point of the gutter. This is where you'll hammer in another nail about 1/2 inch from your previous mark. Repeat this step until you reach the downspout.

    • 5

Tie a piece of string from the nail at the highest point of the gutter to each descending nail until you reach the downspout. This is your guideline for proper alignment of your gutter.
