- 1
Unplug the pool pump to prevent electrical shock while changing the sand in your S-240 filter.
- 2
Close the outlet valve on the pool pump. The outlet valve is found on the right side of the pump and has a lever. Move the lever to "closed." This will prevent water from entering the filter as you change the media.
- 3
Open the drain plug on the filter. The drain plug is a small pipe covered by a cap located on the bottom of the filter. Unscrew the cap to open the drain plug. Allow the water to exit the filter.
- 4
Remove the clamp holding the multiport valve to the filter tank using a wrench. Remove the multiport valve by lifting it off the tank. You will now have access to the filter tank.
- 5
Scoop the remaining sand on the bottom of the filter tank using a coffee can or other small container. Continue scooping until all the sand is removed. Spray the inside of the tank with a garden hose to remove any remaining sand or debris. Allow the water to drain.
- 6
Replace the drain cap once all water has drained. Fill the filter tank two-thirds full with water. This will protect all assemblies within the tank from pressure and sand being added.
- 7
Add sand to the filter slowly until all the laterals are fully covered. Once the laterals are covered, pour in the remaining sand. Once all sand is in the filter tank, replace the multiport valve and tighten the clamp to secure the valve. Open the outlet valve on the pool pump to finish filling the filter tank. The filter is now ready for use.

How to Change the Sand for a Hayward S-240 High Rate Sand Filter
The Hayward S-240 is a sand filter within the Hayward S300 series of high-performance filters. The sand should be replaced within the S-240 every three to five years. The edges of the sand will wear down over time and will fail to trap particles and debris. When your pool begins to get dirty more quickly, it's time to replace the sand media in your S-240 filter.
