How to Change a Tensioner on a 1993 Saturn SW1

When a tensioner fails or is worn, it can cause damage to the drive belt. If it completely fails, it can leave a motorist stranded and damage engine components. The tensioner should be changed at the first sign of wear or damage on a 1993 Saturn SW1, stopping any potential for further damage. Replacing the tensioner can be completed by most novice mechanics with a few simple hand tools in a few minutes.
    • 1

Open the hood and support it with the hood prop.

    • 2

Place the box end of a 9/16-inch wrench on the middle of the pulley on the tensioner, located on the passenger side of the vehicle near the alternator.

    • 3

Rotate the wrench counterclockwise to loosen the tension on the belt. Slip the belt off of the tensioner pulley.

    • 4

Rotate the wrench counterclockwise, rotating until the pulley bolt and pulley is removed from the tensioner.

    • 5

Remove the two tensioner pulley bracket bolts with a socket wrench and remove the bracket from the engine compartment.

    • 6

Place the new tensioner pulley bracket into place, lining up the holes in the bracket with holes on the engine block. Install the bracket bolts with a socket wrench.

    • 7

Place the pulley onto the bracket and install the bolt holding the pulley in place, turning it clockwise by hand.

    • 8

Slip the belt over the tensioner pulley.

    • 9

Place the box end of a 9/16-inch wrench on the bolt and rotate it clockwise to move the pulley and increase the tension on the belt.

    • 10

Remove the hood prop and close the hood.
