How to Clean Vinyl & Wood Blinds

Window blinds are excellent dust collectors. They require heavy cleaning periodically to remove dust and grime affixed to the surface of the blinds. By regularly dusting the blinds, you will make heavy cleaning an easier task. Before using any cleaning solution on your blinds, read the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. Some cleaning solutions may not be safe for all blind surfaces.

  • Dusting

    • 1
Fill a spray bottle with water.
    • 2
Spray a microfiber cloth with water to dampen.
    • 3
Close the blinds, so they extend across the entire window or door and shut them, keeping out the light.
    • 4
Wipe each slat with the damp cloth, beginning at the top if they are vertical blinds, and moving downward. If they are horizontal, start at one side and wipe towards the opposite direction. Repeat for all slats.
    • 5
Open the blinds to let the light in, keeping the blinds extended across the opening. Close again, in the opposite direction and repeat the previous step.

    Cleaning Vinyl or Painted Wood

    • 1
Add two or three capfuls of dishwashing soap to a bucket of warm water.
    • 2
Dip a sponge in the water and squeeze out any excess water.
    • 3
Wipe down each slat with the sponge, refreshing the sponge as needed, by repeating the previous step.
    • 4
Dry each slat with a dry cloth.

    Cleaning Stained Wood

    • 1
Dampen a cloth with lemon oil.
    • 2
Wipe down each slat with the cloth, moving along the length of the slat.
    • 3
Spray the blinds with antistatic spray. This will help to keep dust from collecting on the blinds.
