How to Cover Lawn Cushions

Because lawn furniture is out in the sun, rain, wind and sometimes snow, lawn cushions get a lot of wear and tear. The colors fade from the sunlight, the fluffiness of the cushion is lost due to use and the fabric becomes threadbare or gets holes in it from abuse or extreme temperatures. Make your lawn cushions look like new by covering the cushions with some new fabric using the no-sew method.

  Create two different cushions if you need one for the seat and one up against the back, following the same directions. Measure the length and width of your lawn chair with the measuring tape, to find out how much foam you need. Purchase enough fabric for two and one-half times the width and 8 inches longer than your piece of foam.

  Mark out your measurements on the foam using a T-square and the marker to make sure you have perfect measurements. Cut out the foam using an electric knife.

  Take your fabric and lay it out on a large work surface with the right side facing down. Center your cut foam on top of the fabric.

  Wrap your foam as if you are wrapping a present. Fold the fabric to the back of the foam making sure the seam is in the middle.

  Make easy and nice-looking corners by smoothing out the fabric and placing your hands straight on the long sides at one end of the foam. Bend your fingers in, pushing the fabric on the long sides of the foam down, creating an envelope look to your fabric. Fold the fabric from the short sides one on top of the other so that the one on the top comes to the back side of the foam.

  Turn the raw edges of the fabric under along both the short ends and along the middle seam on the back of the cushion.

  Use the safety pins to hold the fabric in place. Space out the safety pins evenly, about one every 6 inches, to securely hold the fabric.

  Set the cushion on your furniture with the pins facing down.
