How to Divide Variables With Exponents

A mathematical expression containing a variable need not be volatile. Although the actual value may be unknown, a variable expression must adhere to the same rules as other mathematical expressions. Dividing a variable expression with exponents follows simple mathematical rules akin to the ones used in numerical division.

  Expand the numerator. If the number above the fraction line is y^4, then write the term as "yyyy."

  Expand the denominator. If the number below the fraction line is y^2, then write the term as "yy."

  Cross out like terms. Since you have four ys on the top and two ys on the bottom, you will be able to cross out two ys on both the top and the bottom. That leaves a result of "yy"

  Simplify the term. Write "yy" as y^2.
