How to Extend a Coaxial Cable Connector

Coaxial cable can be used to carry a number of different electronics signals. These types of cables are called "coaxial" because they consist of two cables separated from each other by a metallic shield. Although these have been used in computer networking for years, consumers were first exposed to these types of cables through the medium of cable TV. A coaxial cable connector can be extended to reach another TV or computer.

Measure how much more coaxial cable you need with the tape measure. Purchase the appropriate length of new coaxial cable.

    • 2

Locate the coaxial cable connector you want to extend. If it is connected to another cable or piece of equipment, disconnect it by unscrewing it counterclockwise. Use a pair of pliers, if needed.

    • 3

Insert a barrel connector into the coupling on the coaxial cable that you are extending. Tighten the coupling on the connector clockwise.

    • 4

Insert the other end of the barrel connector into the coupling on the new coaxial cable. Tighten the coupling clockwise.

    • 5

Secure the barrel connector and coaxial coupling connection so it doesn't get stretched or bumped, which can interfere with the connection. Clip cable clamps around the coaxial wire on either side of the barrel connector and nail or screw them into the adjacent wall or surface.

Run the other end of the new coaxial cable to the place where it is needed.
