Measure how much cement backer board you need to cover the area where you are installing the travertine tile backsplash. Use a circular saw to cut the backer board to fit. Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the wall. Secure the backer board to the wall with screws set 5 inches apart on the studs. If you use more than one piece of backer board, allow a 1/8-inch gap. Fill the gap with silicone caulking. Smooth the caulking in the seam with a wet finger. Cover the seam with fiber tape.

Use a chalk line to mark the top of the tile installation. Use a level to make sure the line is level. Your bottom line is the top of the counter top, which should already be level. Also, use the level to make sure vertical edges are plumb.
- 3
Lay the tile out on a flat surface to determine the pattern you are using. If you using a rectangular grid where horizontal and vertical grout lines align, you can skip this step.
- 4
Place a layer of tile adhesive on the cement backer board with the notched side of a notched trowel. Set the first tile in the tile adhesive along the bottom of the backsplash. Use a spacer to keep the tile slightly off the counter top. Push the tile firmly into the adhesive.
- 5
Continue placing tiles according to your pattern. Put spacers between each tile. Work your way across the backsplash, and then work your way up. Allow the tiles to dry according to the adhesive package's directions. Remove the spacers.
- 6
Mix sanded grout to go into the spaces. Work the grout into the cracks with a grout float. Wipe off excess grout with a damp sponge. Allow the grout to dry.
- 7
Apply a grout sealer with a soft cloth to keep the grout from staining. Allow the sealer to dry.

How to Install a Travertine Backsplash
A travertine tile backsplash adds color and style to any kitchen décor. A travertine backsplash may have stones that are mirror smooth, or the stones may have a tumbled, rougher appearance. Depending on the type of travertine tile installation you choose, you can have tiles that are square or rectangular, cut in a variety of sizes. To add even more flair, choose to set the travertine tile on the diagonal. This is a project that you can do if you have basic carpentry skills.
