Connect your Officejet printer to your laptop or desktop computer. Plug the regular USB end of the included connection cord into one of your computer's USB ports. Plug the other end into the mini-USB port located on the back of your Officejet printer. Connect your printer's power cable to an electrical outlet and turn it on.

Load the installation CD into your computer's optical drive. Run the CD and follow the instructions to load the required software onto your computer. Run the printer software to complete the setup of your Officejet J4680.

Lift the panel on the front of the printer to reveal the paper loading port. Locate the section designated for your size of index card (either 3 by 5 or 4 by 6). Load your index card into the proper section of the printer.

Open the document you would like to print onto an index card with Microsoft Word Excel or a similar word processing application. Go to "File" and choose "Print Options." Select the "Index Card" option (with the correct dimensions). Press the "Print Preview" button to look see how your finished print job will look. Make any final adjustments and press the "Print" button at the top of the page.
