Catch used auto oil in a chemical-free container. Used oil can't be recycled if it is mixed with any other substance. Place a funnel into a plastic container that has a tight-fitting lid, and pour the used motor oil into the container.
- 2
Fill the container to capacity, and screw on the lid. Make sure the lid is secure to prevent leaks.
- 3
Label the container with the words "used motor oil." A piece of masking tape on the outside of the container with those words will suffice.
- 4
Find a used oil recycling center near you. Consult Earth911 (see the Resources) by entering your zip code and "used motor oil" in the information fields. The website will list places near your home that will recycle auto oil.
- 5
Drive to the nearest recycle station, and give the oil to an associate.

How to Recycle Auto Oil
Used auto oil is the byproduct of oil changes in your automobiles as well as other machinery. Used motor oil can be recycled and refined into heating oil or used in power plants to supply electricity to homes. In some cases, used motor oil is refined for reuse in automobiles. The used oil is a hazardous waste product that should never be poured on the ground because it will contaminate waterways and the natural habitats needed to sustain wildlife. Because of the toxicity of used auto oil, most recycling centers will take it for free to keep it out of the environment.
