How to Remove a Floor Drain Plate

Floor drains, like in a basement and other places, have plates that cover them. The floor plates on a drain are usually attached with screws. They can, however, have been caulked or glued into place. Removing floor drain plates is accomplished with the use of a screwdriver, utility knife and a wire brush. The job is completed in about 10 minutes, even by the novice.

Drag a utility knife around the edge of the drain plate between the plate and the drain. Move the knife around the entire circumference of the drain plate several times. This will remove buildup of grease or caulk that may have been used to stick the plate to the drain hole. .

Use a wire brush to brush off any encrustation on the top of the plate that may be covering the screws. Over time, rust and other materials can cover the screws and obscure them, making it harder to find them.

Remove the screws on the drain plate with a screwdriver. Usually there are two screws, but there may be more. Ensure that you remove all the screws on the drain plate.

Pry the drain plate up with a screwdriver, if necessary. In some cases, the drain plate can be stuck to the floor and may require prying to remove it.
