After powering off your computer and detaching all power cords, open your computer case. Different cases open in different ways; you may or may not need a screwdriver for this step.

Clear the way to the card reader. Move wires and remove other components, depending on your system.

Detach all cables running from the card reader to the motherboard and/or the main wire harness. If the connectors have tabs holding them in place, release these before removing the cables to prevent damage.

Remove any screws that are holding the card reader in place.

Remove the card reader from its bay. Some readers may be connected directly into a socket on the motherboard; pull these out from the socket before removing them from your system.
