How to Remove Plug Wires

Spark plugs are connected to wires that transfer electrical current through the engine of a vehicle. Failure to replace worn or damaged spark plug wires will result in poo engine performance. Spark plug wires may look fine from the outside but still be leaking current. If you see sparks while running the engine in a dark garage, remove and replace the plug wires.

Position the end of the boot pliers around the base of the spark plug wire -- the part closest to the engine.

Gently pull in an upward direction on the plug wire boot. Gently wiggle the plug wire from side to side to loosen the connection of the wire on the spark plug, if necessary. Continue to pull the plug in an upward direction while wiggling the plug wire. If the wire doesn't come off easily with a few wiggles, twist the boot in one direction to break the heat seal between the plug wire and the spark plug. The wire should pull off after that.

Remove the plug wires one at a time and replace with a new plug wire before moving to the next wire. This will ensure that the new plug wires are connected with the same routing as the original set.
