- 1
Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery with a socket and ratchet.
- 2
Locate the tensioner pulley next to the water pump. The pulley is low on the engine block. Place a 3/8-inch ratchet drive into the square hole on the face of the pulley and pull up on the ratchet handle. This will release tension on the serpentine belt. Lift the belt off of the alternator pulley. Do not remove the belt from any other pulleys.
- 3
Pry the cover off the wiring harness that connects to the back of the alternator. Push in on the center of the harness and pull the harness off the alternator.
- 4
Remove the two bolts that secure the alternator to the alternator mounting bracket with the socket and ratchet. Pull the bolts out of the alternator then lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
- 5
Place the new alternator against the mounting bracket, slide the bolts through the alternator and thread them into the holes in the bracket. Tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet.
- 6
Push the wiring harness connector back onto the alternator and push the cover back into place.
- 7
Pull up on the 3/8-inch socket handle and slide the serpentine belt over the alternator pulley. Let go of the handle and remove the ratchet from the tensioner pulley.
- 8
Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery with the socket and ratchet.

How to Replace the Alternator in a 1994 Surf
The 1994 Toyota Surf is the second generation of the Surf body style. The Surf was marketed in the United States as the Toyota 4Runner and in Japan as the Surf. The 4Runner and the Surf are both off-road vehicles designed for light duty trail riding. If you own a Toyota Surf, you may find it easier to locate your alternator by asking for an alternator for the Toyota 4Runner.
