How to Reset a BMW's Radio Security Code

Many vehicles manufactured by BMW are equipped with theft-deterrent systems that are connected to the radio. If the radio is disconnected from the car battery or removed from the vehicle, it is disabled and cannot be used. A unique security code must be entered to restore functionality to the radio. This code was supplied with the vehicle when it was new. If you do not have the code, you can obtain it from a BMW dealer.

  Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" or "II" position without starting the engine.

  Press the power button on the radio to turn it on. Wait for the word "CODE" to appear on the radio display.

  Press the "M" or "Min" button on the radio.

  Press the radio station preset number buttons to enter the security code. The radio automatically turns on after the last digit of the code is entered.
