How to Reset a Smart Chip

Smart chips refer to the tiny chip inserted in toner or inkjet cartridges. The small chip can take note of the amount of ink used up by the printer and alert you should a refill be needed. Most printers already have these chips installed when you buy one new. However, there may be times when the chip fails to determine the accurate ink level in your cartridge. You need to reset the smart chip in order for the printer to recognize the ink left in the printer.
  • Manual Resetting

    • 1

Turn off the printer by pressing the power button.

    • 2

Turn the printer back on and press the "Ready" or "Go" button as well as the "Return" button together.

    • 3

Wait for the LED light to flash on your printer, and a notification for "Print Registration" or "Performing Self Test" to appear on the screen of your printer.

    • 4

Select "Maintenance Page Count" or "Maintenance Count" from the list of options available, and press the "Reset" button to completely reset your smart chip.

    • 5

Push the "Return" button once to allow the printer to go back to its normal settings.

    Using a Chip Resetter

    • 1

Take out the ink cartridge from the printer and wipe it using a paper towel.

    • 2

Locate the copper nodes found at the back of the cartridge. This is where you will attach your smart chip resetter. Clip the resetter onto the cartridge's back nodes.

    • 3

Press the chip-resetter button found on top of the device, and hold it for at least 5 seconds. Wait for the LED light on the resetter to turn on to signify that the smart chip has been reset.
