- 1
Purchase an OBDII code reader at your local auto supply. The cheapest reader will cost about $25.
- 2
Look directly below your steering column and above your pedels. Locate a semi-rectangular, roughly 2-inch-long electrical port. This is the OBDII connection point.
- 3
Plug in the OBDII diagnostic tool into the port.
- 4
Turn the key to one position before start, typically called the "ON" position. All of the normal diagnostic lights should illuminate in this key position.
- 5
Follow the instructions on your OBDII reader. Typically it will have a "READ" and "ERASE" button. To acquire the trouble engine codes, press the "READ" button.

How to Retrieve Trouble Engine Codes on the 2004 Corvette
The 2004 Corvette is the performance flagship of the 2004 model year Chevy lineup. Equipped with a powerful engine, aggressive stance and sleek lines, it is built for speed and handling. The Corvette, with all its power and speed, like any car can suffer mechanical failures now and again. Some of the failures will trigger a "check engine" light on the gauge cluster, indicating that some codes have been stored in the OBDII or Onboard Diagnostic System Generation 2. Fortunately, this system is shared on most cars post-1996, and it is cheap and easy to retrieve the codes.
