How to See If Someone Holds a Business License in Michigan

Certain businesses in Michigan are required to register for a license in order to operate in the state. Health care workers, adult and children care facilities, real estate agencies, carnivals, polygraph examiners and funeral or cemetery businesses are just some of the types of people and businesses that must hold either a professional or business license. Michigan provides several databases that individuals or businesses can check to see if an organization or person holds a business license in the state.
    • 1

Determine whether the business or person is in the health care industry, construction or repair industry or another industry.

    • 2

Launch your web browser. Navigate to the state Department of Community Health license/registration database if verifying the license of someone in health care, the Bureau of Construction Codes license search if investigating a construction, electrical or plumbing contractor, or to the general Bureau of Commercial Services licensee search for any other business type.

    • 3

Fill in all requested information about the business or person being verified. Click "Search" or "Submit" after filling out the fields.

    • 4

Examine the results to see if the business is listed as having a license. Check with the other license databases if the person's or business' classification is somewhat ambiguous.

    • 5

Consult Michigan's "State License Search" page if you are unable to verify the license using the online databases. All occupations requiring specific licenses are listed in alphabetical order with a description of the license needed. The person or business in question may not even be required to hold a business license in Michigan.
