How to Take Apart a Penn 704Z Reel

The 704Z spinning reel is a medium sized reel manufactured by Penn. Producing many quality reels throughout the years, the Penn 704Z spinning reel is prized by many anglers who pursue a variety of game fish. From freshwater bass to inshore fish species, the Penn 704Z spinning reel is a durable and reliable reel capable of handling a variety of fishing conditions. Taking the reel apart is often necessary to clean the reel on a routine basis.

      Place a rag or old towel on a sturdy work surface to protect the Penn 704Z reel from damage.

      Hold the 704Z so that the front of the reel is easily accessible. Turn the drag control knob to the left to loosen. Continue turning the knob until it can be removed from the spool shaft. Remove the spool from the spool shaft by pulling it straight off the reel.

      Locate the screws on the side of the spool housing. Loosen the screws and remove with a flat head screwdriver. Remove the bail wire and bail assembly including the arm, saddle and spring by pulling off the bail housing.

      Remove the handle from the Penn 704Z reel by holding the body of the reel firmly in one hand and turning the handle to loosen. Turn the handle backward, or to the left, to loosen and remove.

      Position the reel on its side so that the handle side is on the bottom. Locate the three screws that hold the side plate in place on the reel body.

      Loosen and remove the three screws with a flat-head screwdriver. Set the screws aside and pull the side access plate from the body of the reel.
