How to Upgrade the MAF on a Mustang

The Mustang is a compact sports car designed and manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. The Mustang has a long hood and a short rear deck, creating the sports car look. The Mustang is equipped with a mass airflow--or MAF--sensor. The sensor relays messages to the engine computer, telling the engine how much air is entering at a specific time. The engine uses this information to adjust the air-to-fuel ratio. You can choose to upgrade the MAF sensor within your Mustang to ensure maximum fuel consumption.

  Park the Mustang and leave it to cool for a half-hour. This will prevent the sensor from being too hot to touch.

  Open the hood of the vehicle and locate the current MAF sensor. The sensor is found just past the air filter with one connector coming from it. The sensor is identified as a small black box.

  Disconnect the MAF sensor by pulling the connector straight out. Place the connector to the side to prevent damage, as it is needed to install the upgraded sensor. Use a T20 Torx and remove the securing torx screws from the sensor.

  Pull the sensor out of the vehicle. Be extremely careful when pulling the sensor straight up. Discard the sensor if it is damaged.

  Place the upgraded MAF sensor onto the mount. Position the sensor so the torx screw holes align with the holes on the mount. Replace the torx screws and tighten securely. Plug the connector into the upgraded sensor. The connector will snap into place. Close the hood of the Mustang. The sensor is now upgraded and ready for use.
