How to Use Pallets for Firewood

Discarded wooden pallets are ideal to use for firewood and kindling. Before cutting the pallets, ensure the wood has not been treated with chemicals. The color will be a deeper brown or green if it has been treated with creosote or similar kinds of wood preserver. The chemicals may produce harmful toxic fumes when burned. Stack the pallets in a dry area such as a woodshed or in the garage, if space is available. Allow the wood to dry thoroughly before cutting to size.

Put on the eye protectors and work gloves. Protective equipment will prevent wood splinters from getting in your eyes and fingers.

Saw the pallets into small strips. Ensure the strips are small enough for your fireplace. Stack the strips vertically, leaning against each other if you are using the wood for an outdoor campfire. The wood will burn easier if stacked vertically.

Remove the nails. Use the pliers to remove the nails from the pallet after you saw the small pieces. The nails will not burn and may cause a later hazard.

Pallets also make great storage units for regular firewood.
