Impatiens Won't Grow

Impatiens that don't properly grow can be frustrating for gardeners. Taking a look into all possible causes of this problem helps you determine the best solution. Once a solution is found, you're well on your way to a healthier plant.
  • Geography

    • Impatiens thrive in partial to full shade. If they are planted in full sun, they may not grow well at all. Additionally, full sun can cause the flowers to wilt.

    Considerations

    • Diseases such as downy mildew can cause stunted growth or death. Signs of this disease include pale green leaves, followed by the leaves turning yellow. Use an appropriate fungicide to help control the spread of this disease to other parts of the flower.

    Warning

    • Other viruses that can affect the growth of impatiens include impatiens necrotic spot virus and spotted wilt virus. Signs include black spots on leaves and stunted growth. Plants affected with either disease should be discarded as soon as possible.

    Alternatives

    • Lack of nutrients may contribute to impatiens not growing. Use a water soluble fertilizer, such as a 13-13-13. However, if a soil test indicates a lacking nutrient, change fertilizers as needed to add the missing nutrient to the soil.
