History
-
The U.S. Army solicited bids form 135 automakers in June 1940 to produce a quarter-ton, 4x4, light reconnaissance vehicle. The only three automakers that responded were Willys, Ford and Bantam. The three companies collectively put the first template for a Jeep together in one year. The model was known as the Willys MA. Today, Chrysler and the Jeep division operate as part of the Chrysler Group LLC.
Function
-
Jeeps were originally intended for rugged off-road use. Farmers and the military were the first markets for the Jeep. As it became more popular, Jeep design was geared toward everyday vehicles. As of 2010, Chrysler Group LLC produces Jeep models such as the Grand Cherokee, which is a high-end luxury SUV.
Wrangler
-
The Wrangler is the most iconic Jeep still in production. It is one of the last 4x4 vehicles on the road with solid front and rear axles.
