Preparation
- 1
Remove all four rubber disks by lifting them off of the packaging strip.
- 2
Insert one disk firmly into each of the four bottle caps. They should fit completely flat alongside the notches in the bottle cap. Set the caps aside.
- 3
Fill a one gallon container with warm water. Add 1 tbsp. of the one-step no-rinse cleanser. Close the container and shake until the cleanser dissolves. Leave the cleanser in the container for a minimum of 10 minutes.
- 4
Pour one cup of the cleaning solution into your cereal bowl. Allow it to soak.
- 5
Set the mixing spoon, bottle caps, measuring cups, measuring spoons and cooking thermometer into a mixing bowl. Pour half of the remaining solution from the gallon container into the bowl. Swirl the water around so all of the contents get wet and clean. Allow them to soak.
- 6
Place a funnel over your soda bottle. Fill the bottle halfway with the cleaning solution. Repeat the process with all soda bottles. Cover the bottle opening with your hand and mix the solution around in the bottle. Place the funnel in the mixing bowl.
- 7
Allow all items to soak in the cleaning solution for a minimum of 10 minutes. Remove all items from the mixing bowl, and place them on a clean, dry paper towel. Pour the cleaning solution out of all the bottles and bowls.
Making Root Beer
- 1
Fill the one gallon container with water that feels warm to the touch, or is 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 2
Pour one cup of water from the gallon container and discard. Pour another cup of water from the gallon container. Pour this water into the cereal bowl.
- 3
Stir 1/4 tsp. root beer yeast into the warm water in the cereal bowl.
- 4
Pour half of the remaining water in the gallon container into the mixing bowl.
- 5
Add 1 packet of flavor crystals, 1 cup of packed brown sugar and 1 cup of granulated sugar to the water in the mixing bowl. Shake the root beer mix and then add 2 tbsp. and 1 tsp. of the mixture to the mixing bowl. Stir until everything in the mixing bowl has dissolved.
- 6
Pour the yeast mixture in the cereal bowl into the mixture in the mixing bowl. Gently stir the mixture.
- 7
Place the funnel over the one gallon container, still about halfway full of warm water. Pour the mixture from the mixing bowl into the funnel. Place the lid on the one gallon container and shake well.
Bottling and Carbonating
- 1
Place the funnel over one of your soda bottles. Fill the bottle to the base of the neck, or approximately three inches from the top. Do not overfill the bottles. Overfilling might interfere with the carbonation process. Repeat the process with the other three soda bottles.
- 2
Place the caps tightly and securely on the bottles.
- 3
Store the bottles upright in a dark location with a consistent temperature of 68 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 4
Feel the bottles once per day. When the bottles feel firm to the touch, you can refrigerate the root beer. Depending on temperature and environmental factors, this process can take as little as one day or as much as two weeks, but it usually takes around three days.
- 5
Drink the root beer when it is cold. Discard any remaining root beer after four weeks.
