Kitchen Island Specs

  • Built-In Islands

    • Most built-in islands are wired and can have outlets on the sides or along the top rim. Some have built-in sinks and dishwashers, while others are plumbed for water, making it easy for two or more cooks to prepare food by having access to water and a drain at all times. Besides housing necessary kitchen components, islands can have drawers and shelves, increasing storage space. A built-in island is likely to be made from the same materials as the rest of the kitchen cabinets.

    Custom Islands

    • If the kitchen is large enough to support an island, contractors can construct islands to the client's specifications. Adding an island to a kitchen can be a way to add functionality. Custom building allows the client to incorporate as many features as she wants. Contractors advise clients that the island needs to be 42 inches away from an opposite counter, however some contractors are willing to go as close as 39 inches.

    Prefabricated Islands

    • Prefabricated islands can be added to kitchens. Specialty stores may sell islands that can be assembled at home or the buyer can hire someone to put the island together for them if it is a knock-down unit. Many of these islands come with wheels so it can be moved from place to place. They almost always have drawers and shelves for extra storage. The top of the island provides additional workspace for cooks and could include a bar for casual eating. Some have drop leaves and adjustable shelves.
