Dirt bikes are off-road motorcycles, meaning they are not made for use on normal streets and highways. They are designed to travel on bumpy, slippery or sloped places, such as mountains or deserts. In comparison to road-driven motorcycles, they are lighter in weight, more simply designed, and have longer suspension travel. Also, they have parts that are specifically designed for better driving in off-road conditions.
Knobby Tires
-
Dirt bikes have specialized tires, called knobby tires, that make it easier to ride in rocky places. These tires have raised nodules that cover the entire surface area. The nodules provide more traction than regular tires, making it easier to travel on unpaved surfaces. Knobby tires also have thick, chunky threads which help a dirt bike have better grip in slippery areas, such as sandy or muddy places.
Beadlocks
-
Beadlocks, also called rim locks, are devices that secure the bead of a tire to the wheel of a dirt bike and other vehicles. Dirt bike riders will often decrease the pressure in tires to create a wider treading pattern for experimental riding. A decrease in tire pressure can cause the rim to loosen from the wheel or completely detach, leading to safety hazards. The beadlock secures the tire and prevents hazards by locking the bead to the tire, even when tire pressure is low.
Other Parts
-
A dirt bike's chain is the most important part because without it, the bike's tires will not rotate correctly. The chain on a dirt bike is very similar to one on a regular street bike. It consists of sprockets, which are metal grooves that help the chain to rotate. Underneath the chain, at the bottom of the bike, is a long metal piece called a kick stand, which secures the bike in an upright position when it is stationary. Most bikes have kick stands to keep them stable when not in use.
