Police Training for Batons

Police officers use batons to protect themselves from potential assailants without using their handguns. The baton is non-lethal and can stop assailants without seriously wounding them.

Significance

• When learning to use the baton, police officers learn to use it safely and effectively. Like any blunt object, the baton can be very dangerous if used improperly.

Function

• During baton training, the police are taught where to stand, where to hit and how to hit. Police are trained to disarm attackers first by hitting them in the arm or hand with the baton. Hitting bony areas is effective when using a baton. Hitting someone in the knee or on the collarbone will stop an assailant from attacking.

Types

• There are two types of attack with a baton: jabbing and slashing. The jab is not as powerful as the slash, but is much faster.
