The Specifications for a 1968 SS Camaro Convertible

  A classic car with prized style and power, the 1968 Camaro SS convertible is particularly rare. Only 16,927 of the 235,247 Camaros sold for the 1968 model year were V-8 convertibles. The Camaro didn't change significantly from the model's first year in 1967, other than some improvements in convenience features and the number of options available.

Changes

• Changes in the 1968 Camaro included the subtraction of side-vent windows, the addition of side marker lamps on front and back, and the inclusion of a bezel to separate tail lamps. Mechanical options offered in 1968 included an increase in engine and transmission choices. The Camaro SS trim came in both coupe and convertible styles.

Engineering

• Engines for the Camaro SS convertible included the standard six-cylinder and the supercharged 396 V-8. Another option was a six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 230 cubic inches, a horsepower rating of 140, and 220 pound-feet of torque. The supercharged V-8 was the most powerful option, with a displacement of 396 cubic inches, 325 horsepower, and 410 pound-feet of torque.

Transmission Options

• Chevrolet offered three transmission options for the Camaro SS convertible. A three-speed manual transmission could be upgraded to a three-speed heavy duty or a two-speed, Powerglide automatic.

Suspension

• The 1968 SS featured a front, coil-spring suspension system with shocks and sway bar. In the rear, the car used a single-leaf spring suspension with shock absorbers.

Measurements

• The SS body was 184.7 inches long and had a wheelbase measurement of 108 inches, a front track of 59 inches and a rear track of 58.9 inches. The Camaro SS was almost identical in size to all 1968 Camaros.

Extras

• The standard 1968 Camaro convertible SS cost $2,835. Optional features included deluxe seats, tinted glass, power windows, a powered convertible top, cruise control, power steering and an AM/FM stereo radio with cassette tape player.
