Considerations
-
Decide how much money and time will be invested in the lawn. A low fertility lawn is less work and money, whereas a high-fertility project creates a more-manicured appearance but takes longer and is more expensive.
Guidelines
-
St. Augustine grass responds best to a fertilizer that contains a lot of nitrogen. Nitrogen promotes the growth of foliage. Apply 1/2 to 1 lb. nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Use 1/2 lb. if the blend is water-soluble and 1 lb. for slow-release compounds. The lush growth will fight off diseases and insects.
Time Frame
-
Feed the St. Augustine lawn two to six times between spring and fall. Wait until the danger of frost has passed in the spring to begin. Every 30 to 60 days is a good guideline to follow. Fertilize late in the fall to maintain the green color and encourage quick spring recovery.
