Unique Pet Costume Ideas

  Selecting a unique pet costume allows the furry or feathered members of the family become part of the Halloween festivities. You can make your own costume or purchase one from a pet store or any big box retailer. No matter what costume you choose for your pet, it should be safe for him to wear. He should be able to move freely, have unobstructed vision and the costume should be free of loose or dangling elements that could entangle him. Take into consideration the weather as well. In warm climates, animals are just as susceptible to the heat as people are and unnecessary clothing is not only uncomfortable but dangerous.

Dog Costumes

• The costume you choose for your dog can reflect his breed and personality. A large breed like a Great Dane is a good choice for a superhero, firefighter or soldier; a tiny Chihuahua looks best masquerading as a mouse, princess or ballerina. Dogs with long or dense coats can be trimmed to create a unique costume; you can transform your Poodle into a Topiary with some clever trimming and colorful dye.

• Cat costumes can be as simple as a cape and a mask, some cats may tolerate more costuming than others. Choose a superhero costume like Batman, a fun literary getup like Sherlock Holmes or an out-of-this-world alien get-up. Since cats are such adept climbers, it is essential to keep the costume you choose simple, and use elastic or break-away components.

Other Pets

• Pets other than cats or dogs can become part of the Halloween fun as well. Some, like snakes can become part of a human costume. Dress up as Voldemort and drape your pet snake around your shoulders and you will share an impressive costume with minimal effort. Small creatures like rabbits can accompany a magician costume, or can have their cages decked out for the festivities. If your small pet is shy or difficult to handle, keep him close at hand and confined to a travel cage or leash if applicable.
