Watering Plants With Different Temperatures for Science

Science class explores the world of plants by conducting different experiments while following the scientific method. Instead of just watching a plant grow, test to see what water temperature is best for plants and what temperature ranges should be avoided.
  • Hypothesis

    • Research how plants grow and create a hypothesis about how plants will grow with varied temperatures of water. Determine the type of plant to be tested and the water temperatures to be used.

    Experiment

    • Select three sample plants of similar height and maturity. Mark each plant so there is no confusion about which will receive each of the hot, cold, and room temperature water. Keep the quantity and frequency of water the same among the three samples. Record the temperature of all three waterings for accuracy's sake.

    Analyze

    • Analyze flower growth to draw a conclusion as to which temperature is better for plant growth. Depending upon how hot the water was, you may have seen that the water cooked the plant and killed it. If the results are inconclusive, re-test with hotter and colder water or change plant variety.

    Tips

    • Take photos of the plants along the way to show how the varied water temperatures affected plant growth.
