When to Plant Tomatoes in Central Florida

Tomatoes are a warm-weather crop and central Florida enjoys two warm-weather growing seasons: spring and fall. Avoid growing tomatoes in the hot summer when high temperatures prevent plants from setting flowers.
  • Seeds or Seedlings

    • Because of Florida's mild temperatures and lengthy growing seasons, tomato seeds can be sown directly into the soil. The seeds should germinate within a week or two. Transplanted seedlings require less maintenance than direct sowing. To minimize shock, transplant seedlings after a rain, on a cloudy day or late in the afternoon.

    Soil pH

    • Tomatoes grow best in soil that is slightly acidic with a pH of 6.2 to 6.5. Add garden lime if the soil has a pH of 6.0 or lower. Apply iron and magnesium if the soil has a pH of 6.5 or higher.

    Spring Planting

    • Plant tomato seeds or seedlings safely from January through March. Plants will thrive in the warm spring temperatures and will be harvested before the hot summer begins.

    Fall Planting

    • Tomato seeds and seedlings can be planted after summer temperatures begin to fall in August and September. Harvest the ripe tomatoes before the temperature drops in winter.
